My name is Jorge Cerna and I am an 11th Grade Humanities Teacher at HTHMA. I have lived in San Diego almost my whole life and would find it difficult to picture myself living anywhere else. I earned my Bachelors and Masters degree from San Diego State University and my Teaching Credential from National University. My wife's name is Sarah, who is an Occupational Therapist in the Chula Vista school district. We have two daughters, Paige and Ellie.
Before becoming a teacher I was a college basketball coach at San Diego State University and Cal State Fullerton. As much as I love the sport of basketball, the ability to mentor student athletes and see them grow was the thing that I loved the most about coaching. When you are a coach you become a big part of the student athletes lives and have a responsibility to not only teach them the sport but also help guide them on their personal journey. Once I got out of coaching I felt something was missing and I realized forming those relationships with my student athletes was hard to replicate in another setting and I knew it was time for me to get back into an education setting. My main goal as a teacher is to help students grow as individuals and assist them in reaching their personal goals in the classroom and in life. I seek to help and inspire all my students find the best part of themselves. I emphasize working hard and learning from our experiences in the classroom (the good and the challenging).
Some of my personal interest include; College Basketball (March Madness is my favorite time of the year), Beach Camping, attending sporting events, going to movies, reading historical fiction books, video & board games, and Disneyland. My favorite sports teams are SDSU and OKC Thunder.
